Kelley Palmer, also known on Instagram as the @peacefilledmama is a coach, writer, wellness advocate and community organizer committed to using the tools and philosophies of yoga to cultivate liberation, joy and peace for herself and others.

Her connection to the living practice of yoga, a path of mindful wellness and self-realization fuels her work, impacts her life and propels her to want to share it with others through her writing, events and guest teaching opportunities.

Being a mother of two liberated souls has created a point of focus that brings these tools to the way she mothers and also calling her to share this with all parents.

She remains focused on making this healing practice accessible to all, connecting to communities that are normally excluded or ignored in mainstream wellness circles.

We talk about her commitment to breaking old generational patterns, her liberatory approach to life, discipline and parenting, and how she manages the opinions and expectations of others along the journey. I found Kelley’s approach so refreshing and yet reassuring, I’m sure you will too.

Themes:

  • Being a mother this role of caretaker of another person is really, for me, a reflection of our yoga practice
  • Your baby has never had a mother before. So he doesn’t know. Which means that you get to choose, like, how you’re going to show up and what you’re going to do
  • Parenthood is a practice…what does this mean?
  • All of the feelings that we feel, all of the discomfort ,all of the unease that we feel, is because we are time traveling. We’re either living in the past or we’re projecting into the future, and the only work the only point of the practice is to bring us to the present.
  • I come back to the practice of my breath, because it’s available to me at any moment.
  • Getting our children to obey isn’t a goal of mine. But I understand that is something that’s really ingrained in us, especially black people across the Diaspora who’ve been the victims of colonization and enslavement and displacement.
  • I just believe in ease.
  • As a mother, it’s my job to hold space.
  • Especially black and indigenous people of colour, you have this awakening that what we have bought into as parenting is actually harmful and not in alignment with who we are.
  • I don’t believe that our children come here as empty slates.
  • White supremacy is not ours to dismantle. That is for white people to dismantle and we do a great disservice to their liberation and ours by breaking them for the world.
  • You’re worthy of love and affection and care, regardless of how you show up in the world.

“I’m not going to hold this capitalist model of productivity equaling their worth. I’m going to tell them, they’re worthy of my love and affection, regardless of their grade. I’m going to tell them that they’re beautiful and amazing, dependent upon their individual gifts and talents, not what the world says are valuable gifts and talents.”
